Social Interactions of "New Media"

My term project's topic for the course “New Media” is on the impact on social interactions as a result of "new media". I plan on researching the differences it has made to face to face interaction as compared to anonymous (semi-anonymous) online interactions. I will review several articles on the subject written by educators (e.g.: Professor Denis McQuail) and other students. I will also review online media (blogs, new reports, forums, other social media) to gauge an opinion of “new media” users. There are several social interactions I will research, to include: dating, networking, sports, education. If during the course of my research I find other interactions that seem relevant I will include them also.

  1. Your research project seems to be quite interesting. Our way of socially interacting has changed after the introduction of the new media. From my perspective I believe too much new media is definitely bad. Most of the time we interact with our peers by either sending texts or posting something on facebook, etc... Physical interaction has dropped greatly. I don't have any figures but from just analyzing people around you.

I'm not against social interactions with regards to new media but I think if we only rely on new media it is not a good thing. Today we in class the use of laptops have increased and many students prefer taking notes on their laptop. The idea of taking notes in a notebook will disappear in the future and this may effect our handwriting skills. It's just a thought which came to my mind when I think about technology and new media.

This should be a very interesting topic to research.

  2. Your research project and the idea of social interaction have similarities with my research project on mobile technology. Where ever you go, it could be on the bus, subway, classroom, diner, elevator most of the people are on their mobile devices. There is no interaction between people. Everyone just does their own thing. I've seen instances where people text someone in the next room, so they don't have to physically walk over. It would be nice if you could get some kind of statistics on the rate of interaction and how it has gone down.

    1. And mobile games add to that. I have been in a room where there are 5 people playing "Words with Friends" amongst each other and not saying anything to each other. they all just look down at there smart phones and play. That is one reason I have not gotten a Smart Phone, i don't want to be looking at my phone all day. Yes it would have benefits, but the temptation to get sucked into that word to too great. The other reason that i have not gotten one is that they are too fragile. If I need to pay for an additional data plan i want a phone that can do most things. and the "durable" ones don't seem to be as full featured as the "delicate" ones. But, alas At&T will no longer support my phone after 15May2012

  3. Your research topic is very interesting. Not many people have interactions with other people face to face in the past few years. Most people interact each other through their phone even when they can be a few feet away from each other. Best of luck on your research paper.
